Running free in Jungfernheide Forest – just watch out for those pesky pigs!

Since moving to Berlin I have discovered that it is not only just people, traffic and trams, but Berlin has also many forests, parks and lakes. A 10 min u-bahn trip away from my home and I can run for hours in a beautiful forest

In Berlin north, surrounding Tegel Airport runway is Jungfernheide Forest, an area where I can officially run off lead! I  am very lucky as are there are a number of designated areas, known as ‘Hundeauslaufgebeit’ where we can run free.

Autumn colours

I get there by travelling on the U6 to Otisstraße. After exiting the station, I turn left and after a short walk along Otisstraße, I arrive at the forest entrance. Unfortunately, I need to stay on the lead for the first part which is such a shame. The path takes me past the Flughafensee, which always looks so inviting to jump into, but unfortunately as a designated bathing lake us furry friends are not officially allowed to swim there.

In the distance you can see one of the beaches, the first part of our walk

As I wander along the lake, past the bathing beaches, there is always Berlin artwork to be found, no matter how remote!

If you are lucky you may also see some of the locals. My human does make me keep my distance, which given their size is probably a wise idea!

Wild boar

Once we are past the beaches and nature reserve area I am let loose – it is so easy to spend 2 hours just wandering along the many paths, and of course watching out for those planes (and don’t forget the boar!)

Sometimes it feels like I have the whole forest to myself
